Motions

WHEREAS Carnival is a defining cultural institution of Trinidad and Tobago and an expression of the nation’s heritage, creativity and plural society;

AND WHEREAS Carnival contributes significantly to national identity, social cohesion, employment, tourism, entrepreneurship and foreign exchange earnings;

AND WHEREAS evolving economic, infrastructural, environmental, governance and participation challenges require structured dialogue among stakeholders and coordinated national planning to ensure the sustainability and inclusivity of Carnival;

BE IT RESOLVED that this Senate call upon the Government to take steps toward the sustainable development of Carnival as a national cultural and economic enterprise, including strengthening institutional coordination, policy planning, infrastructure, skills development and inclusive participation, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including the National Carnival Commission;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Government convene, within six (6) months, a National Colloquium on the Future of Carnival and Related Cultural Events to facilitate structured national dialogue and to make recommendations for a long-term strategy to secure the cultural, economic and institutional sustainability of Carnival.
