Senator Sophia Chote SC
Sophia Karen Chote SC was appointed as an Independent Senator in the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago in 2015. She is an attorney-at-law who was admitted to the Bar in 1989. She first worked as a prosecutor at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions before entering private practice. She was appointed Senior Counsel in 2011.
During her career she has lectured at the Hugh Wooding Law School to students from different jurisdictions in the English speaking Caribbean. She has also been a member of the Council of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago, a member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Law Association and was an Executive member of the Criminal Bar Association for about twenty years.
She has worked a Judge of the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago and sat as a member of the Law Reform Commission from 2011-2013. Most recently, she was as a member of the Mercy Committee.
She heads her own Chambers, Alpha Chambers whose members are attorneys-at-law with different skill sets and practices. She has played a role in different non-governmental organisations, the most important being that of an Executive Member of the Rape Crisis Society for many years.
Originally from Rio Claro, Senator Chote now lives in St. Joseph. She is a past student of the St Augustine Girls’ High School from which she graduated with an Island Scholarship. She read law at Kings College, University of London. She is married to Edward Kacal and is a mother of two.
