Tributes to Mr. Deoroop Teemal and Dr. Lenny Saith

The Senate paid tribute to former independent senator, Mr. Deoroop Teemal, who passed away on August 3, 2025. Mr. Teemal served as an independent senator during the 11th, 12th and 13th Republican Parliaments. A minute of silence was observed.

The Senate proceeded to pay tribute to Dr. Lenny Saith, who passed away on August 25, 2025. Dr. Saith served in various ministerial portfolios during the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 9th Republican Parliaments. A minute of silence was observed.

The Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2025

The Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, Sen. David Nakhid moved the second reading of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Senate. Opposition Senator, Sen. Faris Al-Rawi, was first to enter the debate, followed by Independent Senator Dr. Marlene Attzs. Fifteen additional senators contributed to the debate before the wind up by the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs. The bill was committed to a Committee of the Whole Senate for consideration clause by clause. No amendments were made. With 16 votes for, 13 votes against and 1 abstention, the bill was read a third time and passed.
