The Speaker granted Leave of Absence to the Member for Diego Martin Central from today’s sitting.
The Minister of Finance moved a Motion to increase borrowing under the Guarantee of Loans (Companies) Act. The Leader of the Opposition was first to respond, following which the Prime Minister was allowed to make a Statement.
The Prime Minister made a Statement in the House about the exercise of the constitutional veto of the appointment of a nominee to Head the Financial Intelligence Unit.
Debate resumed on the Motion by the Minister of Finance. The Prime Minister entered the debate, followed by the Member for Diego Martin North/East, the Minister of Education and the Member for Arouca/Maloney. Some eight members made contributions before the Minister of Finance rose to conclude the debate.
The Minister of Finance moved a Motion asking the House to approve increased borrowing under the Development Loans Act. The Member for Diego Martin North/East was first to enter the debate, followed by the Minister of Local Government and the Leader of the Opposition. Five Members made contributions before the Minister of Finance concluded the debate. The Motion was approved.
The Minister of Finance moved a third Motion pertaining to an increase in borrowing under the External Loans Act. The Leader of the Opposition was first to enter the debate, followed by the Minister in the Ministry of Finance and the Member for Port-of-Spain North/St. Ann’s West. The Minister of Finance then rose to conclude. The Motion was then approved.
At the next sitting the House will consider two Bills, the Purchase of Certain Rights Bill and the Central Bank (Amendment) Bill. Before adjourning the Speaker announced appointments to the four Sessional Select Committees. The sitting adjourned at 2:56 a.m.
