Two Bills

The Public Health (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and the Administration of Justice (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)(Amendment) Bill, 2026, which were passed in the House of Representatives on May 15, 2026, were read a first time in the Senate. See the Order Paper.

The Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Hon. Khadijah Ameen, MP, moved that the next stage of the Public Health (Amendment) Bill, 2026 be taken later in the proceedings. The motion was approved.

The Leader of Government Business, Sen. the Hon. Darrell Allahar, moved that the next stage of the Administration of Justice (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) (Amendment) Bill, 2026 be taken later in the proceedings. The motion was approved.

The Public Health (Amendment) Bill, 2026

The Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Hon. Khadijah Ameen, MP moved the second reading of the Public Health (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The Leader of the Opposition Bench, Sen. Dr. Amery Browne, was the sole contributor to the debate. The bill was committed to a Committee of the Whole Senate for consideration clause by clause. No amendments were made. The bill was read a third time and passed.

The Parole Bill, 2026

The Minister of Justice, Hon. Devesh Maharaj, MP, moved the second reading of the Parole Bill, 2026. Debate began on the bill. Nine senators contributed to the debate before the wind up by the Minister of Justice. The Senate then resolved into a Committee of the Whole, where it was considered clause by clause and approved without amendments. The bill was then read a third time and passed.
