Announcements / Leave of Absence

The President of the Senate granted leave of absence to Sen. the Hon. Anand Ramlogan, S.C. who is out of the country, Sen. the Hon. Vasant Bharath who is ill and Sen. Elton Prescott, S.C. who is also out of the country.

The President then read a letter from the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago appointing Mr. Wayne Sturge, Mr. Daniel Solomon and Dr. Sharon Le Gall as temporary Senators. They then took the Oath of Allegiance as a temporary Senator for the day’s sitting.

Announcements By The President/Vice-President
Appointment of Committees

The President of the Senate read the names of Senators appointed to the Standing Orders Committee, the House Committee, the Committee of Privileges and the Statutory Instruments Committee. The President also read letters from the Speaker of the House asking for concurrence in appointing members to a Joint Select Committee to deal with the Draft Houses of Parliament Service Authority Bill and another on Election Campaign Financing.

The Leader of Government Business moved that the next stage of the Bill be taken at a Sitting of the Senate to be held on August 26, 2014.

The Miscellaneous Provisions (Proceeds of Crime, Anti-Terrorism, Financial Intelligence Unit of Trinidad and Tobago) (No. 2) Bill, 2014

The Minister of Finance and the Economy moved that the next stage of the Bill be taken later in the proceedings. Leave was granted.

The Minister of Finance moved the second reading of the Miscellaneous Provisions (Proceeds of Crime, Anti-Terrorism, Financial Intelligence Unit of Trinidad and Tobago)(No. 2) Bill, 2014. Sen. Dr. Lester Henry was the first to contribute on the Bill, followed by Sen. Helen Drayton, Sen. the Hon. Gary Griffith, Sen. Faris Al-Rawi and Sen. Anthony Vieira. 14 Senators spoke before the Minister of Finance and the Economy rose to begin his wind up. Debate on the Bill was suspended.

The Senate adjourned to Wednesday August 20, 2014 at 1:30 p.m.
