Leave of absence was granted to Sen. Allyson Baksh and Sen. Dr. Dhanayshar Mahabir who are out of the country and to Sen. H.R. Ian Roach who is ill. Temporary Senators, Ms. Alisha Romano, Mr. Nikoli Edwards and Mr. Albert Sydney were appointed temporary Senators in the absence of Senators Baksh, Mahabir and Roach respectively.
Temporary Senators Ms. Romano, Mr. Edwards and Mr. Sydney took their oaths of allegiance.
There are six urgent questions. All were answered. See the appendix to the Order Paper for details.
Four Questions on notice qualify for oral answer. Three were answered and one (95) deferred for two weeks. See the Order Paper for details.
The Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries moved a Motion asking the Senate to adopt the Report of the Special Select Committee of the Senate appointed to consider and report on the Miscellaneous Provisions (Trial By Judge Alone) Bill, 2017. Sen. Gerald Ramdeen was first to enter the debate, followed by Sen. Sophia Chote SC and the Attorney General.
Debate resumed (from June 20, 2017) on the Criminal Procedure (Plea Discussion and Plea Agreement) Bill, 2017. Sen. Wayne Sturge was first to enter the debate, followed by Sen. Taurel Shrikissoon, Sen. W. Michael Coppin and Sen. Khadijah Ameen. Thirteen members spoke (over the course of three days) before the Attorney General rose to wind up the debate. Deliberation on the Bill was then adjourned.
Sen. Mark raised a matter on the Motion for the adjournment, The imposition of a round of new taxes by the Government through the Central Bank by rounding off the one cent coin. The Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries.
