Leave of absence was granted to the Member for Couva South (on maternity leave April 11 to June 30), Member for Laventille West (today), Member for Moruga/Tableland (out of the country May 3-13),Member for Diego Martin Central (today), Member for Siparia (today) and Member for Tobago East (today).
The Deputy Speaker also expressed condolences on the passing of former independent Senator Ms Dana Seetahal, SC.
The Deputy Speaker then read into the record correspondence from the President of the Senate stating that at a sitting of the Senate on Tuesday May 06, 2014 Sen. H.R. Ian Roach was appointed to the JSC on Municipal Corporations and Service Commissions (in lieu of Mr. Subhas Ramkhelawan). Sen. Dr. Dhanayshar Mahabir was appointed to the JSC on the Insurance (No. 2) Bill, 2014 in lieu of Mr. Ramkhelawan.
23 Papers were be laid. Papers nos. 2-4 were referred to the Public Accounts Committee and Papers nos. 5-7 were referred to the Public Accounts (Enterprises) Committee. See the Order Paper.
10 Questions qualified for Oral Answer by Ministers. Questions Nos. 88, 95, 97, 121,98, 124 and 125 were answered while questions nos. 96 and 123 were deferred for two (2) weeks. Question no. 126 stood over to the next Sitting of the House in accordance with Standing Order 19(6). See the Order Paper.
12 Questions qualified for written reply. Question No. 54, 55, 58, 100 and 117 for written answer were circulated and Questions Nos. 56, 57, 61, 99, 115, 120 and 122 for written answer remained un-circulated.
Two Bills were introduced by the Clerk of the House in the name of The Attorney General: The Miscellaneous Provisions (Prisons) Bill, 2014 and the Indictable Offences (Committal Proceedings) Bill, 2014. See the Order Paper.
Debate continued on the Miscellaneous Provisions (Administration of Justice) Bill, 2014. Link The Member for St. Joseph was the first to re-enter the debate followed by the Member for St. Augustine and the Member for La Brea. The Member for Barataria / San Juan the rose to contribute followed by the Member for Point Fortin, the Member for La Horquetta/Talparo, the Member for Port-of-Spain North/St. Ann’s West, Member for St. Anns and the Member for Arouca/Maloney. Debate on the Bill was then adjourned.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development moved the second reading of the Land Tenants (Security of Tenure)(Amendment) Bill, 2014. View Bill Here The Member for Port of Spain South rose to give her contribution before the Leader of the House rose to respond. Debate on the Bill was then adjourned to a later date.
The House Adjourned to Friday 16th May, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. where they will consider a Motion to approve the notice of the nomination by His Excellency the President to appoint Prof. Ramesh Deosaran as Chairman of the Police Service Commission. Debate is also expected on the Miscellaneous Provisions (Licensing Committee) Bill, 2014. The sitting ended at 9:30 p.m.
