The President of the Senate granted leave of absence to Senator Avinash Singh who is out of the country and Sen. H.R. Ian Roach who is ill.
The President then read a letter from the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago appointing Mr. Stuart Young and Dr. Aysha Edwards as temporary Senators. They then took the Oath of Allegiance as temporary Senators for the day’s sitting.
The President then welcomed a group of students from ROYTEC, who were seated in the public gallery.
Two Papers were laid by the Minister of Finance and the Economy. See the Order Paper.
The Attorney General placed the Indictable Offenses (Committal Proceedings) Bill, 2014 on the table. The Attorney General then moved that the next stage of the Bill be taken at a Sitting of the Senate to be held on June 24, 2014. This motion was agreed to.
The Interim Report of the Joint Select Committee on the Legislative Proposal entitled, “The Draft Houses of Parliament Service Authority Bill, 2014” was presented by Senator Elton Prescott, SC.
14 Questions qualified for Oral Answer. Questions nos. 71, 75, 80 and 86 were answered. Questions nos. 69, 78, 81, 87, 91, 100, 102 and 103 were deferred. See the Order Paper
The Attorney General made a statement regarding the government’s success in a claim made against the State by HYATT.
Debate on the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Property Bill, 2014 which was in progress on Tuesday May 27th 2014 was resumed. Sen. the Hon. Dr. Bhoendradatt Tewarie read the Bill a second time. The House of the Senate then resolved itself into Committee Stage to consider the Bill clause by clause.
The President put the question that a Bill entitled “An Act for the Incorporation of the Beauty Services Association of Trinidad and Tobago and for matters incidental thereto” be read a second time. The Senate agreed.
In accordance with Standing Order 76 (7) the President appointed Mr. Fazal Karim (Chairman), Mr. Embau Moheni and Mrs. Raziah Ahmed to serve on the Special Select Committee on the Bill.
The Leader of Government Business moved that the Senate be adjourned to Wednesday June 11th, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. to continue consideration of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Property Bill, 2014. The question was put and agreed to.
