1st Sitting of the House of Representatives
1st Session - 13th Republican Parliament
The Clerk read the Proclamation by Her Excellency the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago declaring the 1st Session of the 13th Parliament open. The national anthem was played.
The Clerk invited nominees for the office of Speaker of the House. The Leader of the House proposed Mr. Jagdeo Singh. This was seconded by the Member for Fyzabad. There being no other nominees, Mr. Jagdeo Singh was duly elected Speaker of the House and took the oath of office.
The Speaker of the House, Hon. Jagdeo Singh, MP, sought nominations for the post of Deputy Speaker. Dr. Aiyna Ali was the sole nominee and was, as such, duly elected Deputy Speaker and took the oath of office.
All members took the requisite oath or affirmation.
The Speaker of the House indicated that Her Excellency wished to address the members of both Houses assembled together. The sitting was suspended and the Speaker of the House exited the building, accompanied by the President of the Senate, to await the arrival of the President. The President, escorted by the Presiding Officers, entered the House Chamber and addressed the members of both houses assembled together.
One paper, the address by Her Excellency the President, was laid.
The Leader of the House and members of the different benches brought congratulatory remarks on the opening of the 13th Republican Parliament.
The House brought greetings to the nation on the upcoming celebration of Indian Arrival Day.
The House adjourned to a date to be fixed. The Sitting concluded at 4:51 p.m.
