Sen. Saddam Hosein made a request for leave to move the adjournment of the House on a definite matter of urgent public importance namely the failure of the Government to institute preventative measures to alleviate the perennial flooding matter in Trinidad and Tobago. The President of the Senate was not satisfied that this matter qualified under this Standing Order.
The Leader of the Government Business moved motions requesting an extension of 11 weeks to the JSC on the Cybercrime Bill, 2017, The Income Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2018, the Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters Bill, 2018 and the Tax Information Exchange Agreements Bill, 2018 and the Gambling (Gaming and Betting) Control Bill, 2016 in order for the Committees to complete its work and produce a final report by September 14, 2018. The motions were approved.
The Attorney General moved the second reading of the Debate is expected to begin on The Miscellaneous Provisions (Supreme Court of Judicature and Children) Bill, 2018. He indicated that he would like the Law Association to make comments on the Bill before continuing the debate.
Sen. Wade Mark raised a matter on the adjournment on the modernizing of the criminal justice system by placing further emphasis on restorative justice rather than retributive justice. The Attorney General responded.
Sen. Mark raised another matter on the failure of the Government to provide law enforcement personnel with adequate training for purposes of addressing the growing issue of gang violence in Trinidad and Tobago. The Minister of National Security responded.
The Sitting concluded at 3:10 p.m. The Senate adjourned to a date to be fixed.
