The President of the Senate granted leave of absence to Sen. the Hon. Martin Joseph. Mr. Foster Cummings took and subscribed to the oath of office, replacing Sen. Joseph during his absence from Trinidad and Tobago.

The Pensions (Amendment)(No.2) Bill, 2008, the Teachers’ Pensions (Amendment) Bill, 2008 and the Assisted Secondary School Teachers’ Pensions (Amendment) Bill, 2008, which were passed in the House of Representatives on Wednesday July 23, 2008, were brought from the House of Representatives and read a first time in the Senate. The Bills are in the name of the name of the Minister of Public Administration (Hon. Kennedy Swaratsingh, MP)

Debate resumed, from Tuesday June 17, 2008, on the Geneva Conventions Bill, 2008, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs beginning her wind up. The Bill was then considered in Committee and passed with amendments.

Children's Legislation

The Minister of Social Development moved the Second Reading of the Children’s Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2008, which was passed in the House of Representatives on June 13, 2008. The Minister also sought and obtained leave to debate simultaneously the Children’s Community Residences, Foster Homes and Nurseries (Amendment) Bill, 2008. Fourteen members participated in the debate before the Minister began his wind up. The Children’s Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2008 was passed with a division of 25 for and none against.

The Senate adjourned to Wednesday July 30, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

On that occasion the Senate will continue with the Children’s Community Residences, Foster Homes and Nurseries (Amendment) Bill, 2008, and begin debate on the Pensions (Amendment) Bill, 2008 and the Teaching Service (Compensation) Bill, 2008.
