The Prime Minister, Hon. Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, MP, made a statement about her participation in the Shield of the Americas Summit in Doral, Florida.
The Minister of Land and Legal Affairs, Hon. Saddam Hosein, MP, moved the second reading of the Law Revision (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Debate began on the bill with one member making a contribution before the Minister rose to conclude. The bill was considered in Committee and approved with amendments. The bill was then read a third time and passed with a division of 39 for, none against and no abstentions.
The Minister of Justice and Minister in the Ministry of the Attorney General, Hon. Devesh Maharaj, MP, moved the second reading of the Civil Division Bill, 2026. Mr. Keith Scotland, SC, MP, was the sole contributor to the debate. Following the wind up, the bill was committed to the Committee of the Whole for consideration clause by clause. The bill was read a third time and passed, without amendments.
The Attorney General, Sen. the Hon. John Jeremie, SC, moved a motion that the House take note of the Statement by the President under section 9(1) of the Constitution setting out the specific grounds on which the decision to declare the existence of a state of public emergency was based. Leave was sought to debate along with this motion, an inter-related motion that the Proclamation made by the President on the 2nd day of March, 2026 declaring that a state of public emergency exists in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago with effect from Tuesday 3rd March, 2026, be extended for a further period of three months. Leave was granted and debate began on the motions. Seven members contributed before the wind up by the Attorney General. With 26 votes for, 12 votes against and no abstentions, both motions were approved.
The Member for Diego Martin North/East, Mr. Colm Imbert, MP, raised a matter on the adjournment namely the need for the Minister to address the unacceptable condition of Saddle Road. The Minister of Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Jearlean John, MP, responded.
The Member for Diego Martin North/East, Mr. Colm Imbert, MP, raised a second matter on the adjournment namely the need for the Government to provide clear and unambiguous guidance on the implementation of the Landlord Business Surcharge. The Minister of Finance, Hon. Davendranath Tancoo, MP, responded.
The House brought greetings to the Muslim community on the upcoming celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr.
