21st Sitting of the House of Representatives

The Speaker granted leave of absence to the Member for Chaguanas East (today’s sitting), the Member for Tunapuna (March 2-9), the Member for San Fernando East (42 days beginning March 6) and, later in the proceedings, the Prime Minister (today’s sitting).
Tributes were paid to the former President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez, who passed away earlier in the week, by the Leader of the House, the Leader of the Opposition and the Speaker of the House. The House then stood in silence for one minute in memory of Mr. Chavez.
The Speaker of the House, the Member for Couva North and the Leader of the Opposition made brief statements on the commemoration of International Women’s Day 2013.

The Attorney General moved the second reading of the Defence (Amendment) Bill, 2013. The Leader of the Opposition was first to enter the debate, followed by the Minister of National Security, the Member for Diego Martin North/East and the Minister of Legal Affairs. Eight members made contributions before debate was suspended.
At the next sitting, debate is expected to continue on the Defence (Amendment) Bill, 2013.
