Senator Sadiq Baksh
Mr. Sadiq Baksh first entered Parliament in 1995 as a Senator and Minister of Government, serving as Minister of Works and Transport (5th Parliament) and later Minister of Housing and Settlements (6th Parliament) in the United National Congress administration. Mr. Baksh would contest and win the San Fernando West constituency in the General Election of 2001, and would be one of the 36 members of the House of Representatives in the 7th Parliament, which failed to elect a Speaker due to the Government and Opposition each winning 18 seats.
In November 2002 Mr. Baksh was appointed an Opposition Senator in the 8th Republican Parliament, and served in this position until his appointment was revoked in June 2006.
Mr. Baksh would later become one of the founding members of the Congress of the People political party, which contested the 2007 General Election, but despite obtaining over 140,000 votes, did not win a seat in the 9th Republican Parliament.
