Mr. Carlos John entered Parliament as a Senator and Minister of Government in 2000, near the end of the 5th Republican Parliament. He would later contest and win the St. Joseph seat in 2000 (6th Republican Parliament), and again serve as a Government Minister. He would contest and win the seat again in 2001 (7th Republican Parliament) and this time serve as an Opposition Member of the 7th Parliament, which failed to elect a Speaker due to the Government and Opposition both winning 18 seats.
