The Honourable Selwyn Richardson, MP
Mr. Selwyn Richardson was a prominent Trinidad and Tobago attorney-at-law and politician who served as the country's Attorney General and Minister of National Security on multiple occasions. He was known for his anti-corruption stance, earning the nickname "Mr. Fix It".
After serving in the Trinidad and Tobago Police Force, Mr. Richardson studied law in England and returned to practice in Trinidad. He was appointed a Senator and served as Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs and Leader of the Senate from 1976 to 1981, and again as Attorney General from 1986 to 1989. He also served as Minister of National Security from 1989 to 1991.
As Attorney General in the early 1980s, Mr. Richardson launched an investigation into high-level corruption within the previous government, which reportedly faced significant internal roadblocks. As Minister of National Security, Mr. Richardson was among the government officials taken hostage and shot during the 1990 Jamaat al Muslimeen insurrection at the Red House (parliament building).
Mr. Richardson was assassinated by unknown assailants in his driveway on June 20, 1995. His murder remains unsolved to this day. He is remembered as a dynamic and colorful politician, often called "Mr. Clean" and the "corruption fighter"
