Mr. Wesley Gibbings first served as a Temporary Independent Senator in the 13th Republican Parliament.

Mr. Gibbings is an author, journalist, media trainer, and press freedom campaigner who has been in the media business for over 40 years. He is Vice-President of the Media Institute of the Caribbean.

Mr. Gibbings has trained journalists throughout the region and co-authored/edited several training manuals for use by Caribbean journalists. Among the publications are: A Climate Change Handbook for Caribbean Journalists (editor, 2005), An Election Handbook for Caribbean Journalists (co-author/editor 2009); Reporting the Climate Crisis – A Handbook for Caribbean Journalists (co-author 2020). He has also served as a facilitator at numerous international and regional events related to Caribbean media development.

Mr. Gibbings is also a former journalism lecturer at the Caribbean School for Media and Communication (CARIMAC), University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica; and is currently a member of the team of journalism trainers retained by the Media Institute of the Caribbean (MIC), and Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM). In 2017, he was recognised for his journalism and press freedom activism by the US National Association of Black Journalists and received the organisation’s Foreign Journalist (Percy Qoboza) Award. In 2022, he was an Excellence in Journalism awardee of the Trinidad and Tobago Publishers and Broadcasters Association.

Mr. Gibbings is an outgoing member of the Steering Committee of the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) and serves on the Council of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX).
